< future envisionment >
Washing machines are an epitome of the consumer society, made thousands of miles away, large amounts of metal transported across the world, only to be discarded a few years later.
Can we imagine a different washing machine business model, based around digital fabrication, where the washing machine is sold more as IP than solid product. The initial shell and core parts may be constructed at large factories still, but alternative fascias and controls may be added closer to market. Digital artisans, local menders and makers, will have small-scale 3D printers, cutting machines, etc., in the back of their work van and perform small scale repairs and periodic refurbishments, lengthening the use-life of the machine.
