Many countries have legislation to prohibit discrimination based on gender, race or other protected characteristics. These apply to all forms of digital and non-digital systems and organisations, but raise particular issues for AI due to its complexity, especially in black box machine learning. AI can embody bias due to many causes not least training data that embodies past human discrimination.
