The term smart city refers to the use of combinations of sensors and digital technology, including AI and IoT, to monitor and manage urban environments, especally to improve well-being and sustainability. The simplest example is live traffic monitoring using cameras, which can then be used to alter traffic signals to create a more efficient flow of vehicles. Longer term data may be used for urban planning. Some smart cities have been developed from scratch but technology can also be deployed in existing cities.
