Web logging is when data about web usage is collected and analysed. This may be at the server-end recording which pages have been visited or may be browser-end when JavaScript-based applications on a web page record more detailed click-by-click interactions. This may be used to customise individual experience or for more global optimisation of web performance. More controversial uses typically relate to personal data being gathered using cookies or other forms of tracking, especially if that data is used outside the direct web platform, for example for adverts or passed on to third parties.
