{"id":587,"date":"2020-02-08T06:33:22","date_gmt":"2020-02-08T06:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alandix.com\/statistics\/?page_id=587"},"modified":"2020-02-08T06:43:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-08T06:43:15","slug":"talking-data","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alandix.com\/statistics\/masterclass\/talking-data\/","title":{"rendered":"talking data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Day 2 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/alandix.com\/statistics\/masterclass\/\">master class<\/a> was a round table discussion with people from a variety of areas human\u2013computer interaction, bio-mechanics, software development, mathematics and urban regeneration.<\/p>\n<p>Several participants introduced a particular topics or probe \u00a0they are facing with their data and this led to discussions that connected to a wide variety of areas.<\/p>\n<p>Topics we discussed included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>building explanatory models from questionnaire data<\/li>\n<li>dealing with relatively small data sets with relatively large numbers of measured values for each data element<\/li>\n<li>data reduction \u2013 principle components and factor analysis<\/li>\n<li>doing easy understandable analysis for <em>exploring data<\/em> even if not the perfect model\/method for the final publishable analysis<\/li>\n<li>stratified samples (re-weighting analysis\/results based on population statistics)<\/li>\n<li>deliberately having unbalanced samples that emphasise a particular group<\/li>\n<li>dangers of spurious results from large volumes of data, Bonferroni correction and other techniques<\/li>\n<li>SPSS and use of the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/statistics.laerd.com\" target=\"_blank\">Laerd resources<\/a> \u2013 I&#8217;d not come across this, but highly recommended by participants<\/li>\n<li>trying multiple models until one &#8216;works&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>how to make sense of some of the complex models possible in tools such as SPSS, R, etc.<\/li>\n<li>combining model-driven and data-driven analysis<\/li>\n<li>making use of large-volume poor-fidelity data with small-volume high-fidelity data<\/li>\n<li>dealing with one-off data where it is hard or impossible to gather more<\/li>\n<li>Montey-Hall problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I will endeavour to write short blogs about each of these ave time &#8230; do chase me if there is one that you&#8217;d particularly like me to priorities!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Day 2 of the master class was a round table discussion with people from a variety of areas human\u2013computer interaction, bio-mechanics, software development, mathematics and urban regeneration.
