Key items <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>highlighted<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>do you need statistics anyway<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">why statistics is hard<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>when to use statistics<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Part 1: Understanding randomness<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>getting a <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>gut feel for the behaviour of random phenomena<\/em><\/span> and in particular how easy it is to see structure when there is none<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0learning how probability can help us where our intuition fails<\/li>\n<li>understanding the ubiquity of the Normal distribution and why it cannot be applied without great care to <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>power-law data from social networks<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and similar phenomena.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Part 2: Doing it (if not p then what?)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>traditional (p-testing) and Bayesian statistics \u2013 what they mean and what they don\u2019t<\/li>\n<li>philosophical differences between the two<\/li>\n<li>common issues including the <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>role of the researcher vs the experiment<\/em><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Part 3: Design and implementation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>gaining power \u2013 how to ensure studies and experiments reveal real effects including the <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>noise\u2013effect\u2013number triangle<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li>interpreting and visualising results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Course at CHI 2022 21st April 2022 The course as arranged around three key topics: understanding randomness; doing it (if not p then what; and design and implementation.
