Designing Physical

Keynote at OzCHI 2023: Design from a distant world, Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington, Aotearoa | New Zealand, 2–6 Dec. 2023.

Twenty years ago I gave a previous OZCHI keynote "Getting Physical". This was towards the beginning of my own fascation with understanding how the physicality of humans, devices and spaces influences digital design. This reached a personal milestone a year ago when my most recent book, "TouchIT – Understanding Design in a Physical-Digital World", was published co-authored with Steve Gill, Jo Hare and Devina Ramduny-Ellis. Much remains unchanged: the basic physiology of our bodies or philosophy of place is largely the same now as it was twenty years ago. However, much also has changed, especially in the contexts within which digital applications are used and our ability and desire to create physical devices or embed computation into smart homes, cities and factories. In this talk I will recap a little of the fundamentals of physicality and then consider tools and methods to help us design the next generation of interactions.
