Charles Babbage was a nineteenth century inventor, famous for his Difference Engine, which used mechanical means to compute complex calculations. He is thus seen as one of the pioneers of computing. He later invdented a more complex programmable device, the Analytical Engine, which is regarded as the first programmable computer, with his collaborator, Ada Lovelace, as the first programmer.
