connectionist model

Terms from Artificial Intelligence: humans at the heart of algorithms

The term connectionist refers to models of cognition relating to the level of neurones and their network of connections and also to practical AI techniques derived from these analogies, in particular artifiicial neural networks. Within AI the term may be used interchangably with sub-symbolic. It is in contrast to higher-level cognitive models that focus on semantic units, and with symbolic or knowedge-rich methods in AI.
