In biological populations, different indviduals greo, breed and die ate differnet times, the idea of generation os herev=fore kore an average time from birth to breeding. In a genetic algorithm the articial process is usually more lock-step, with a population being considered as a group, with fitness assessment, mutation, breeding and death applied at a single time step.
