Getsalt is a term used in the psychology of perception to describe the way that overall features emerge as a whole rather than by piecing together parts. For example you just see a 'face' rather than inferring it is a face based on the presence of a nose, mouth and eyes. Bottom-up computer vision algorithms often do nto operat like this, but certain kinds of neural network do appear to emulate aspects of human gestalt.
