Pareto-optimal

Terms from Artificial Intelligence: humans at the heart of algorithms

In multi-objective optimisation, a value is said to be Pareto-optimal is there is no alternative value that is better for all criteria. Typically there may be values where one is better on one criterion and the other on another. For example, when considering ways to read, we may think paper books are best for ease of thumbing through pages rapidly, but that ebooks are best when searching. There is no technology that is best on all criteria, but both paper books and ebooks are pareto-optimal, as neither is better than the other on all citeria.
