Synapses are the points of contact between neurones In the human brain. Each neurone has many, often thousands or tens of thousands, of long fibrous extensions called axons that contact other neurones. At the end of each axon is a synapse, where it connects with another neurone. These synaptic connections may be to neighbouring neurones or far across the brain. Indeed the white matter in the centre of the brain consists entirely of axons connecting distant neurones. The degree of connection, how likely one neurone is to affect another, varies between synapses and can be thought of as a synapse weight.
