Confabulation is the process of filling in details to create a coherent internal story, even when details have been forgotten or not known. As humans we do this to a limited sense all the time as our brains only remember key details and so much of what we 'remember' is effectively created on the fly. Where people have some form of brain injury, degenerative condition or temporary perceptual or cognitive problem, confabulations may become far more extreme. Large-language models can similarly fill or invent details in order to create a coherent narratuve, thus leading to what is called hallucination.
