HCI4D or HCI for development is the subject area and community that takes into account the needs and views of less economically developed groups of people or parts of the world, especially in the global south.
Crucially, many digital systems are designed in Europe or North America and therefore embody concerns and constraints of that context. Not only are these not well fitted for other parts of the world, but they may become a hand-me-down technology perpetuating inequalities. For this reason, many HCI4D initiatives are based on co-design with or design by those in the situations. The term not designed in California has been coined to capture some of this spririt.
