intention

Terms from Human Computer Interaction the Basics

The glossary is in progress.

Intention is about what a user means to do. Intention is important for understanding errors: the intention might be incorrect (a mistake), but if correct the actions may not be correctly executed (a slip). In AI and sensor-based systems as well explicit intention, the user may have implicit intention detected by the AI. Designers also have intentions, and one of the heuristics for designing for appropriation is to expose intentions, to ensure user appropriations do not undermine critical design choices.
