privilege

The term 'privilege' is used in the humanities and social sciences to refer to the way in which certain ways of discussing, investigating or presenting the world put a spotlight on particular aspects – they are 'privileged'. For example, if we record educational attainmant in demographics we privilege formal education over practical experience.

Note that this is semi-independent of the sense of one person having privilege in a society, although not entirely, as it is easy to 'privilege' (in the social science sense) aspects that are important to those with 'privilege' (in the sense of societal power dynamics).
