In an organisation and in informal social situatons, people have roles: manager, mother, athlete, author. Often the same person may play different roles at differet times, even in the same organisation. For example, the manager may become a student on a training course. The individuals matter of course, but often systems are designed around the roles in an organisation as the particular person playing the role may change.
