Technology adoption refers to the large-scale process by which a new technology grows from a few initial users to breakthrough into widespread use ... or fails to do so. Diffusion of innovation is a particularly influential model of this process.
Note that the term adoption on its own can refer to this, but also the way particular individuals start to use a new product. Of course, the two are not independent as widespread use is the result of numerous individual decisions.
