Terms from Statistics for HCI: Making Sense of Quantitative Data

Mechanism is about understanding how and why something occurs: the steps and processes, which buttons were pressed, what screens viewed, what information was examined and how this all creates a larger phenomenon. It is essential to understand mechanism in order to draw lessons and make predictions that generalise and extrapolate beyond particular data and situations.
