Education

1984 - 1987 Part-time D.Phil. in Computer Science
University of York (Department of Computer Science)
Thesis entitled "Formal Methods and Interactive Systems: Principles and Practice"
1980 - 1981 * Diploma in Mathematical Statistics (Distinction)
University of Cambridge (Statistics Laboratory, DPMMS)
1978 - 1981 B.A. in Mathematics (1st Class Hons.)
University of Cambridge (Trinity College)
1971 - 1978 Howardian Comprehensive School, Cardiff

* Not really at the same time! I completed the Mathematical Tripos in two years, but Cambridge requires 3 years residency as well as the exams, so in my 'spare' third year I did the post-graduate Diploma in Mathematical Statistics at the Stats. Lab.

Honours, prizes, scholarships etc.

1978 Member of British Team to the 20th International Mathematical Olympiad in Bucharest, Rumania, at which I was awarded a second prize, a special prize, gave one of the closing speeches before the Rumanian Minister of Education, and appeared on Rumanian television! You can read my personal recollections of this event.
1978 Open Entrance Scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge
1979-1981 Various Tripos and Osborn prizes for examination results
1980 Rouse Ball Essay Prize for an essay on Banach Lattices
1980 Further Open Scholarship
