AI for HCI manuscript sent to publisher

I’ve now sent the manuscript of AI for Human-Computer Interaction to the publisher.  Due out in first half of 2026.

The book explores the rich human side of AI including how AI can help in user experience design and how effective interfaces can help make AI usable and useful.

I originally said I’d write this in 202o during lockdown, but then life got in the way.  In these last years the AI landscape has changed dramatically. So many things of which I first wrote “I know this sounds like science fiction …” have now already happened, so writing had to constantly change prospective prediction to retrospective reporting.

There are still some aspects that are in the nearly there or hoping they are nearly there category, not least support for helping us design for people who think differently from us.  But maybe by the time the book is actually on the shelves …

AI holds many promises for UX design, not least for helping us really deal with people as individuals.  However, also many problems, if designed badly, including deepening digital exclusion.

Similarly, there are many wonderful things being made possible by AI in society, including advances in medicine, but also massive problems including environmental impact, embodying bias, undermining market economics and threatening democracy!

The latter will be dealt with in more detail in this book’s sister volume AI for Social Justice (in preparation) but, for both, understanding the issues can help us make the most of AI’s opportunities whilst guarding against its problems.
