From entry virtual reality in glossary Human Computer Interaction the Basics
Virtual reality (VR) systems present a realistic but generated world on a screen or via some form of VR cave or VR glasses. This includes realistic computer games such as first-person shooters and also more serious applications such as exploring architectural ideas, flight simulators and engineering. In some cases the world that is presented is taken from the real world by using some form of 3D scanning (e.g. flight simulation of a real airport) in others it is entirely fictitious (e.g. sci fi game) or envisaged (e.g. architects drawing).
