Pygmalion was a sculptor in the poem 'Metamorphoses' by the Roman poet Ovid. Pygmalion fell in love with a statue he had carved and asked Aphrodite to bring the statue to life. The story is often used as a parallel for makers of artificial intelligence and robots, especially those espousing strong AI.
