The town stands on the south-west slope of the promontory, at terminus of branch railway, 11 miles north-west of Elgin ; is a watering-place, a small seaport, and an important fishing-station, and has a post office, with money order and telegraph departments, under Elgin, a banking office, a hotel, a suite of baths, a public reading-room, an artificial harbour, Established, Free, and United Presbyterian churches, and 2 public schools with about 305 scholars.
